Buy with your VA benefit
Start with the benefit, not the house
What a VA-backed purchase loan is, and who actually lends the money.
6 minute read
What the benefit is
- A VA-backed purchase loan comes from a private lender such as a bank, mortgage company or credit union.
- VA guarantees part of the loan against loss. That guaranty is what allows lenders to offer terms like the option of no down payment.

A common misconception
- On a standard VA-backed purchase, VA generally does not lend you the money. You apply with a lender, not with VA.
- Learn how the benefit works first, then decide on the home. The benefit is a tool for your plan, not the plan itself.
